 Young people around the world see themselves increasingly as global citizens, willing to move abroad in order to obtain the best education their families can afford.

It is thought that around 15,000 international students come to the UK each year for their A-levels, contributing around £300m in revenue to the independent schools and international colleges which accept them.  Few go to Sixth Form Colleges, for a variety of reasons.

Yet Sixth Form Colleges are ideally placed to welcome them: they can offer a wide range of A-level subjects, have excellent facilities, can cater for both gifted and average students, and can offer a truly “British” experience.  And from a market perspective, state-funded colleges are also very attractive as their fees can be half as expensive as independent/boarding schools or international colleges: a huge attraction for parents who cannot afford £30,000 a year or more.

These students can bring financial and other benefits to a college: not only can they provide a source of funds, but they can enrich the experience of home students, bringing a multi-national, multi-lingual and multi-cultural perspective to an institution.

However, there are various barriers for colleges: the student visa system is complex; international marketing can be expensive; understanding international qualifications is not straightforward; meeting the needs of international students requires experience.
